The sweet spot on YouTube is 8-12 minutes, but you can go longer if the content is highly engaging. YouTube rewards longer videos that keep people watching!
Question: How do you come up with your topics? I don’t mind the idea of putting myself in front of a camera…I just have no idea what I would talk about and if I could possibly come up with enough topics to keep the channel going! (Thanks!)
One of my protips is to check other successful Authortube channels, go to their Videos tab and sort by most popular and see what content is landing. There are so many craft and industry topics to potentially cover, and viewers will watch the same topics from different channels to look for fresh perspectives. And then I jot down ideas as things happen to me in publishing, or I see frequently asked questions on places like Reddit… I create outlines for the ones that I have something to say about.
I don’t like restating something several other authors have already stated. I’m thinking about just talking about story ideas and story progress. Maybe adding in something I’ve learned in my research? That is, if I ever get around to doing YouTube. I think I would need a better laptop and and a studio, plus not feeling so tired every day after work. It’s just five hours, but working in a high school kitchen is tiring.
Alexa,
Thanks for this talk. I found this conference through your YouTube channel, and have been actively working towards curating content for my own channel. I’m writing/posting from China, so that comes with its own set of challenges (especially plugging into a writing circle on a platform that isn’t blocked by the government), but your content has helped make the writing community feel a lot closer. Thanks again for the great lecture and YouTube content.
Cheers,
Kasey
Thank you so much for such kind words! I’m so glad you find my channel helpful, and best of luck with yours!
