Thanks so much for this, Mindee! I’m in the middle of writing a first draft after a long time of not writing. This really gave me some practical tips to keep going.

Thanks for a great interview, Mindee. I am a hybrid pantser/plotter too. I will have to check out more on Michael Hogg’s work. I already take advantage of the vast information K.M Weiland offers.

That’s great. Wishing you the best of luck. It’s actually Michael Hauge, and definitely check out Robert McKee Story, if you can. It’s amazing.

Great info, Mindee! Story structure really saved me in a recent revision, and I can’t wait to test it out with new stories.

    Lots to think about 😀

Could the “relationship as the character arc” can be applied to other than romance, like a sibling relationship
I wonder if that’s the approach Mitch Albom took with “Tuesdays with Morrie”

It definitely can. When you have a romance structure between two characters that don’t have a romantic relationship, it’s often called a buddy-cop relationship story. But the structure is the same. They go through these stages: Denial, reluctance, exploration, acceptance. Also, one thing to keep in mind is that in a romance plot, the relationship is the main character. That helps with figuring out the structure.
